About BCTC

BC Transmission Corporation is the provincial Crown corporation that plans, operates and maintains the province's publicly-owned electrical transmission system. The Minister for the Crown holds 100 percent of the shares of the Corporation, as required by the Transmission Corporation Act of May 29, 2003.

BCTC was created in 2003 to ensure fair and open access to the transmission system. BC Hydro owns the transmission assets (such as towers, poles and substations) and BCTC manages those assets.

We are responsible for:

  • Operating the transmission system: Integrating new facilities and operating infrastructure
  • Planning the transmission system: Planning new infrastructure and upgrades
  • Maintaining the transmission system: Managing the land of the rights-of-way and vegetation, and the transmission facilities and equipment - such as wires, towers, poles and substation

BCTC and the BC Utilities Commission (BCUC)

Upon receiving approval from the British Columbia Utilities Commission (BCUC), we direct new transmission infrastructure investment. The Commission continues to regulate the terms and rates for transmission services.

Where does BCTC operate?

BCTC's corporate offices are located in Vancouver. We also operate two state-of-the-art System Control Centres in the Fraser Valley and Southern Interior, which are responsible for maintaining the reliability of the 'backbone' of BC's transmission grid
