Community, Land & Safety

BC’s electrical transmission system brings power to communities all across the province. We manage the land under the transmission lines (known as rights-of-way), work with communities to integrate the transmission system, and conduct our business with the highest standards of safety.

About the Transmission System

The province’s publicly owned transmission system consists of:

  • More than 18,000 km of high-voltage lines, underground and submarine cables
  • 20,500 steel towers
  • 75,000 wood poles
  • 287 substations across the province

BCTC and Your Community

We collaborate with communities across BC to provide safe, reliable electricity for BC’s future, and real benefits for British Columbia. BCTC provides opportunities for public involvement in planning the transmission system, and we work to develop innovative transmission solutions in a sustainable way.

We’re committed to:

  • BC’s natural environment: We value the province’s natural environment and consult with local communities; have comprehensive environmental policies, and work to connect sources of clean energy to the transmission grid.
  • Safety: We recognize the importance of safety in everything that we do and are committed to the highest standards of safety for our employees, our contractors, and the general public.
  • Consultation: We have an open and transparent process that ensures stakeholders and First Nations are informed and actively involved in discussions about major transmission initiatives in British Columbia.
