Innovation

BCTC’s mandate is to ensure a secure and continuous supply of electricity for B.C. Fulfilling that mandate requires more than operational excellence; proactive, creative thinking is also critical to the continued development of the transmission system.

By using innovative approaches to grid management, we are developing a “future grid” which will increase the capacity of existing assets, extend the life of assets and improve system reliability and security. As part of creating the future grid, BCTC is:

  • Modernizing BCTC’s system control centre. The system control centre controls the flow of power from generators to communities through B.C. We are upgrading our control centre to use the most modern and efficient operating technology available.
  • Incorporating phasor measurement into control centre operations. Phasors enable our system operators to monitor system conditions in real time and immediately identify any problems in the electricity system. The technology allows us to reduce outages by identifying and fixing problems more quickly.
  • Life extension of aging transmission towers: BCTC maintains over 20,500 steel towers and is applying a special composite corrosion protection coating to extend tower life by about 25 years.

Through innovation, we are building connections between the past and the future.
