Transmission Solution

B.C.’s transmission system delivers power down an electricity highway, from generation facilities primarily in Northern B.C. and the Interior, to communities and businesses across the province. B.C.'s electricity grid is part of a regional system of electricity which has been linked to Alberta and the North-western United States for over three decades. These inter-connection links allow us to share resources for a more sustainable and reliable electricity system.

Today's power is being delivered through an electricity transmission system that has grown only four per cent over the last 15 years compared to a 21 per cent growth in electricity use (Source: BCTC, “Planning for the Future”. Built between 1940 and 1980, much of our grid is aging and needs upgrades.

As the Crown corporation responsible for the planning, maintenance and operating of B.C.’s high-voltage electricity system, it is BCTC’s job to ensure the electricity transmission infrastructure is in place to meet our province’s growing electricity needs. BCTC is upgrading the transmission system by investing $3.2 billion over the next 10 years. Our Capital Plan outlines these investments.
