Seventy per cent of Vancouver Island’s electricity is supplied from the Mainland and the Island’s electricity needs are projected to grow by up to 45 per cent over the next 20 years. However, current transmission assets are 35 to 50 years old and are reaching their capacity. BC Transmission Corporation is upgrading the existing electricity supply system from the Lower Mainland to Southern Vancouver Island to ensure that Vancouver Island residents and businesses have a continued secure and reliable supply of power.
BCTC is replacing and upgrading the existing 138-kV facilities that connect the Lower Mainland to near Duncan via Galiano and Salt Spring Islands. The project is slated for completion in 2008.
