The British Columbia Transmission Corporation is the Crown corporation responsible for the planning, operation and maintenance of the province’s publicly-owned transmission system.
Since our incorporation in 2003, we have focused on transmission. We are a separate Crown corporation from BC Hydro, transporting electricity along a system of high-voltage wires. As the independent operators of B.C.’s “electricity highway,” BCTC ensures fair and open access to B.C.’s electricity grid.
BCTC operates over 18,000 km of transmission lines, including underground and submarine cables. Supported by over 20,500 steel towers and 75,000 wood poles, this system of high-voltage wires carries thousands of volts of electricity from generation facilities, like BC Hydro dams, to almost 300 substations around the province. From these substations, BC Hydro delivers electricity directly to B.C.’s homes and businesses.
The majority of B.C.’s transmission infrastructure is now 30-50 years old, and it’s time we upgraded our transmission system to keep up with growing electricity demand. Through innovation, BCTC is building a modern grid for a sustainable future.
