Background
The City of Chilliwack receives its electricity from Chilliwack Substation, located off Young St., near Cheam Ave. The substation is fed by two 69 kilovolt (kV) transmission circuits. For most of their length, these circuits are overhead. They transition to an underground cable system at the south end of the Safeway parking lot, travel under the parking lot, then east on Cheam Ave. and into the substation through the alley behind the Dairy Queen and Cheam Sports.
The cable sections between the manholes to the north of the Safeway parking lot and the substation were installed in the late 1960s and were nearing the end of their reliable life. The Chilliwack Cable Replacement Project is replacing the old cables with new ones located in a totally enclosed concrete duct bank system. The duct banks provide additional security for the cables and make it easier to remove the cables if repairs are ever required.
The Chilliwack Cable Replacement Project will ensure Chilliwack continues to enjoy a reliable supply of electricity long into the future.
