Saanich Peninsula Transmission Project

BC Transmission Corporation (BCTC) has identified the need for improvements to the regional transmission system on southern Vancouver Island. These improvements will address constraints on the existing transmission infrastructure in order to meet increasing demand for electricity in the region.

The Problem

Electricity for southern Vancouver Island is delivered via transmission lines operating at two voltages:

  • 138 kilovolts (kV)
  • 230 kV

The 138 kV system is at capacity, which means that by 2010, it will not be able to meet the growing demand for electricity in the region.

The Solution

The 230 kV system has surplus capacity and can take some of the electrical load off of the 138 kV system. To do this, BCTC will build one new 60 kV double circuit transmission line to enable Keating Substation in Central Saanich (part of the 230 kV system) to supply Sidney Substation in Sidney (currently served by the 138 kV system).

This will result in the transfer of the Sidney Substation load to the 230 kV system from the 138 kV system to allow more room on this system. This project will ensure that the southern Vancouver Island regional transmission system can continue to provide safe and reliable electricity to growing communities in the area.
