Vancouver Island Transmission Reinforcement

BC's population and economy are growing and so is our need for electricity.  Over the next 20 years, the demand for electricity in BC is expected to grow by as much as 45 per cent.  The VITR Project will help to ensure a reliable supply of power for over 700,000 residents and the businesses on Vancouver Island and the southern Gulf Islands.

BCTC has replaced and upgraded the existing 138 kV overhead transmission lines and one of the existing submarine cable circuits connecting southern Vancouver Island to the Lower Mainland with new 230 kV infrastructure.

BCTC is about to energize the second VITR circuit at 230 kV.  It is expected that sections of the line will have power around December 20, 2008, and it will be fully energized within a couple of days.

The project was brought into service in stages:

Stage one - BCTC began energizing the Ladner and Tsawwassen sections of the overhead lines and the associated 138 kV submarine cables on October 24.
Stage two - BCTC completed the energizing of one circuit, including the associated 138 kV submarine cables, on October 31.
Stage three - BCTC is about to energize the second VITR circuit at 230 kV.  It is expected that sections of the line will have power around December 20, 2008, and it will be fully energized within a couple of days.
